Defining Multi-Zone Detection: Check Apples for Apples

Pinpoint Multi-Zone detection is a relatively new concept that was pioneered by Ranger. Multi-zone detectors are designed to show the location of an object. In practice, the volume of the detector's archway is divided into blocks of real estate that detect the presence of target sized metal objects that pass through them.

In most detectors the blocks of real estate, called zones, are stacked upon each other and extend the full width of the archway. When an object passes through a zone it is detected by the zone and an alarm display shows its location. In this case, the alarm display depicts the height of the object above ground. The display can take the form of lights on the front edge of a side panel or a mimic display that represents the archway in graphic form. At Ranger we prefer the mimic as it is less stressful to look at than flashing lights on the edge of a side panel.

Manufacturers, place different interpretations on the meaning of multi-zone detection, so we want to clarify what we mean by it. When we state that our detector has six horizontal zones it means that there are twelve detection channels (two sensors per zone.) Each zone has its own sensitivity adjustment. This permits the detection response of each zone to be independently adjusted. The horizontal zone corresponding to the foot region of the body can be made more or less sensitive than the waist region or visa versa. The detector's alarm display shows the archway divided into six alarm zones and these zones accurately represent the position at which an object passes through the detector.

For example, if a manufacturer claims that a detector has 19 horizontal zones, by Ranger's definition it should have a corresponding number of zone sensitivity controls that permit the user to freely adjust their detection response.

In the case of our Eighteen-Zone detectors, six horizontal zones are subdivided into three additional blocks. In addition to showing the object's height above ground, they also show if it is carried on the left, right or center region of the detector. Sophisticated mapping algorithms process data from the channels and accurately pinpoint the horizontal positioning of the object. Each horizontal zone also has two user adjustable sensitivity controls that adjust the detection response across the zone. For example, the left side of a zone can be adjusted to be more sensitive than the right.

Hopefully, the above explanation will allow you to make a more accurate assessment when comparing different technologies. To illustrate the differences in interpretation, one manufacturer advertises that their newest detector has 31 zones where by Ranger's definition it has12. Why 31? You judge; it has four blocks of lights (eight lights per block) and four blocks per side panel (from a display perspective four horizontal blocks that show an object's height above ground.) The horizontal blocks/zones are subdivide into three vertical regions that enable a left, right or center indication. If an object passes through the center of the archway a block of lights illuminate on both side panels, while if it passes through one side only one block of lights illuminate.

Beware, more is not necessarily better, always ask how many horizontal sensitivity controls a unit has. If a unit has the ability to show if an object is carried on the right, left or center of the body, ask if the sensitivity can be adjusted across each zone.

Ranger's New Family of Walk-Through Detectors

Intelliscan ZonesRanger's new family of detectors include Multiple-Zone, Dual-Zone and Tri-Sector models. The Intelliscan Eighteen-Zone, Weatherproof, Portable and Executive models have eighteen zones that accurately pinpoint the location of weapons. The archway of the Intelliscan "Six-Zone" is split into six regions of detection that identify the height at which targeted objects are carried. The Intelliscan Portable can be supplied in either the Eighteen-Zone or Six Zone configuration.

Ranger "Tri-Sector" is a dual-zone detector that displays if an object is carried through the right, center of left sectors of the detector. The Ranger "Safety Zone" and "Safety Zone School Version" are Dual-Zone detectors that show if an object is carried at ground or ankle height or on the upper body.

Superior Performance

The new generation of walk-through detectors set a higher standard in performance. They include a unique feature called Horizontal Axis Gain Control (HAGC.) HAGC helps to achieve detection uniformity when a detector's magnetic field is influenced by external metal situated near its side panels.

A powerful new optional optimization program called Detection Enhancement has been introduced for sophisticated users that have specialized detection needs. Detection Enhancement enables the user to create customized security programs. New data processing hardware, Digital Signal Processing (DSP) software and detection programs have resulted in significant improvements in interference rejection, discrimination, sensitivity and orientation response. Of particular importance is the improved discrimination, as it cuts unwanted alarms and increases traffic throughput rate. All our detectors offer excellent detection uniformity. In addition to their heightened screening efficiency, these units are easier to set up and use. The new rugged frame design has significantly enhanced vibration tolerance. For an explanation of discrimination and orientation refer to "Understanding Basic Metal Detection."

Our range of detectors utilize low intensity magnetic fields that have been certified safe for users of heart pacemakers and implanted defibrillators. Clinical testing was conducted by the Cardiac Research Department of a US Medical School. Medical testing was also conducted by the Health and Medical Ministry of the Russian Federation. Its certification process is accepted by countries of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States.)

All the new detectors meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Standards for use at US airports and those of the National Institute of Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Standard (N.I.L.E.C.J. 0601.00 Security Levels 1 to 5.)

To improve wheel chair access we have extended our range to include detectors with archway inner widths up to 36 inches (914 mm.)

The new technology uses modern processors that are Year 2000 Compliant.

Versatile Detection Programs

The same twenty highly versatile detection programs are used for all models. They include six weapon screening programs designed for aviation and courthouse security. The programs are configured to meet various threat levels. Significant improvements have been achieved especially in the detection of knives.

The weapons programs are complimented by programs designed specifically for asset protection. They are suitable for the protection of a broad range of assets. Included are programs that provide balanced ferrous and non-ferrous detection, some that suppress ferrous detection while boosting non-ferrous metals and others that suppress non-ferrous materials while magnify the detection response of ferrous objects.

For example, a microprocessor manufacturer may favor Program 10 as it selectively targets ferrous metals while suppressing the response from non-ferrous objects. By way of contrast, a company that produces brass fittings would typically use Program 16 as it selectively discriminates again ferrous (steel/iron) objects. Meanwhile, an electronic distributor would likely select a program that efficiently detects both ferrous and non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, brass, lead, nickel, silver, gold, etc.)

Selective Discrimination Enhances Asset Protection Applications

MicroprocessorRanger's new Selective Discrimination based detection programs revolutionize asset protection screening. They permit specific objects to be targeted while totally suppressing the detection response of other regions of the metal spectrum.

Difficult to detect objects can have their detection response selectively enhanced without raising the detector's baseline sensitivity. For example, a microprocessor or SIMMs memory card can be detected while a soda can and a large quantity of US coins are ignored.

This unique breakthrough in detection software has also been used to raise the quality of Ranger's weapons detection programs, especially in the detection of knives.

The Detection Enhancement Option (Intelliscan models only) provides an additional six programs. These programs permit the user to create their own unique detection profiles. It is particularly useful for detecting objects that have a low detection response. For example, because of their shape or material composition some objects are difficult to detect at certain orientations. Detection Enhancement is described in more detail in the "Walk-Through Detector Options" section. 

Easy to Install and Set-up

Our detectors are rugged, easy to install and calibrate and can be made operational within 15 to 20 minutes. The new program menus guide the user through the simple calibration process. Once set, the calibration parameters are retained in memory. Each time power is switched on, the equipment self-tests and adjusts to its surroundings. Optimum results can be achieved by the user without factory assistance.
